This course is designed to teach non-medically trained individuals how to deal with emergency medical situations in an increasingly dangerous world. The course covers the basics of trauma management, treatment until EMS arrives, and what to do if EMS is delayed. We will discuss crisis mindset, plus some basic anatomy and physiology. From this foundational knowledge, we will cover how to assess and treat a patient, a layered approach to medical equipment, and culminate with multiple scenarios in which the student will treat one or more simulated patients. Each scenario will finish with a peer and instructor critique.  The scenarios build upon previous training to bring the student up to a level at which they are competent to perform basic treatments in most emergency situations. The training will remain within the legal boundaries of treatments that a non-medically trained individual in North Carolina is permitted to perform in an emergency.

The course teaches combative skills in a weapons-based environment (introduction of gun or knife) and introduces students of any ability and experience to high-level yet basic and easy-to-learn concepts, principles, theory, and techniques. We’ll start from ground zero, building the students in a step-by-step process.  Then, as new or enhanced skills are developed, students are put in realistic scenarios to test application of new material in dynamic environments. These environments are based on common scenarios that catch people off guard in violent situations, including attempted armed robbery while walking from a store, car blocked/surrounded at a stoplight, attempted carjacking while getting gas, Tinder date going terribly wrong, taxi driver is drunk or crazy, attempted kidnapping from sidewalk, etc. These skills are tested by time and in force-on-force scenarios. We can duplicate situations and scenarios others have previously encountered, but we cannot predict the future. Therefore, this course is designed to help students think, not just memorize moves.
